Has Third Grade Created A Society Of Line Leaders? (Pick Me, Pick Me)
Ok, there are just some things we’ll never see eye to eye on. I get it, and I’m fine with it. Just please don’t hurt me for what I am about to say. Why do we feel the need to “punish” the person who decides to merge at the last moment when approaching a lane closure in a construction zone?
Warning: Blaming Others Steals Your Power
From all accounts, Heisman Trophy winning Texas Longhorn, New Orleans Saint, on again, off again Miami Dolphin running back Ricky Williams had a tough childhood. There have been allegations of abuse among other things. His tough childhood has transformed into an unpredictable adulthood. As I was watching his bio on ESPN, I was really inspired by something he said.
Three Months From Now What Will You Wish You Had Started Today?
I wish I had played a little less football in the yard with my friends in fifth grade, and taken piano lessons instead. Now, of course there’s no way anyone could have convinced me of that in 1974. (In fact, my inner child is on the floor right now rolling around in laughter!) Today I find myself with virtually no musical talent. I don’t even subject the bottle of shampoo to my singing. I wish I h
Are You Worried That Your Worrying Is Becoming Worrisome?
I had dinner with a friend last week who likely has a secret mantle full of trophies for all kinds of competitions he has won for being the worlds biggest worrier. I mean really. Worry about work, about family, about world peace, about the weather, about the economy, about Iraq, about Iran, about how his meat is cooked, about health care reform, about…
Caution: ‘Just Fine’ Might Not Be Good Enough
Around the office here, we have developed a fairly deep hatred for the word fine. If I ask you how something is, and you respond, “It’s fine,” I am going to conclude that you’re also saying that it’s not great. Fine is fine, and great is great. There’s no confusing the two. If we’re satisfied with fine, we are likely not pursuing great. And that’s not a place I like to be.
Are You A Giver Or A Taker?
Quick. Close your eyes and name the first five people that come to mind that you think have a great attitude. (Mary, James, Hanna, Meg, and Mike.) Ok, good. Now let’s do it again with the names of the first five people that come to mind that seem to drag the rest of the world down a little bit. (Steve, Sara, Bonnie, Tony, and Dave.)
NORAD Tracking Santa’s Progress
In years past, Santa did all the watching (naughty, nice, etc.). Today and tonight kids can keep an eye on Santa's progress thanks to the folks at NORAD. They are tracking Santa across the world, and in addition to internet access, this year kids can track St. Nick on their (or your) mobile device with the new NORAD Santa app.
Enjoying Family & Friends This Holiday Season
In the movie Up In The Air, George Clooney’s character says, “Cameras are for people with bad memories.” I kind of agree. I don’t take a lot of pictures. For the most part I like to enjoy the event and move on. To be honest, I would probably take more pictures if I ever remembered to take my camera with me (although my iPhone helps).
Last Minute Holiday Errands? Be Nice On The Safe Side
I saw a post on Twitter the other day that encouraged us to be nicer than we feel we need to be with people we come across, because they likely have more going on in their world than we are aware of. That’s not only a pleasant idea, it’s also probably very true.
The Quitters Guide To Winning (Or Is It The Winners Guide To Quitting?)
My wife and I play a lot of cribbage. Sometimes I win. Sometimes she wins. Sometimes it’s a close game right up to the end. Other times it’s a blowout. Sometimes when she’s way ahead, she’ll ask me if I want to concede and start a new game. Never. Being way behind is a different kind of challenge.
Caution: Your Days Are Like Currency, Spend Wisely
Mark Cuban is the controversial owner of the Dallas Mavericks NBA basketball team (along with a bunch of other stuff including a chain of movie theaters and cable TV networks). Some people love him. A lot of people don’t. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t care one way or the other.
Crossing The Finish Line (It’s There For A Reason)
Just a quick question. Why would anyone spend the time going through the following process? Decide it’s important to recycle. Spend time and effort separating recyclables from non-recyclables during the week. Throw what’s been determined to be trash into the garbage. Save what’s been determined to be recyclable in a recycle bin. Load the recycle bin into a vehicle once a week. Take a trip to the r
