My wife and I play a lot of cribbage. Sometimes I win. Sometimes she wins. Sometimes it’s a close game right up to the end. Other times it’s a blowout. Sometimes when she’s way ahead, she’ll ask me if I want to concede and start a new game. Never. Being way behind is a different kind of challenge.

Sure the odds are against my comeback, but you never know unless you try. It becomes a different way of playing the same game we’ve played thousands of times. The only thing I know for sure is that if I quit, I will not win. Every now and then I do come back to win. Most of the time I don’t.

What part of life doesn’t this apply to?

Now I’m not saying that it never makes sense to throw in the towel. What I am saying is to give yourself a moment to think about it before you do. Once you decide to give up and walk away, you’ll never know how close you were to success.
