2013 Colorado Flood

Predicting weather can be a fickle beast. (Especially in Colorado.) We've all seen sure-fire blizzard fizzle out to no produce no snow at all, and we've seen sunny forecasts turn into, violent severe storms. But what on earth could have caused a year's worth of rain to fall on areas in Colorado last week?

The City of Fort Collins is sharing this warning on its website and social media pages: "Please stay out of standing and flood waters that pose risks to your health, including infectious diseases, chemical hazards, and injuries." Please heed their advice.

This past weekend (Sept 14/15) was supposed to be the 14th Annual Sustainable Living Fair in Fort Collins- Drew was going to broadcast live from the event on Saturday- BUT because of the 2013 Colorado Flood- Legacy Park was underwater, and The Sustainable Living Association had to cancel the event. With the recent flooding there is a lot of rebuilding and a lot of road construction to be done. There are a limited number of roads to get into Estes Park, Colorado to begin with, but as of right now, there is only one way. That one way is a road which usually closes for the season in October and is currently only open to emergency personnel. (It closed on October 17th last year.)

Call me insensitive, but I do remember when the floods started getting bad on Friday afternoon, asking a few friends if we should get out the tubes we use during the summer to go down the river, and using them to tube down the flooded streets. Seems like I wasn't the only one with mischievous ideas... The difference is these people actually did crazy stuff...

Fifteen Colorado counties currently qualify for federal emergency assistance, including Bloomfield, Morgan, Logan, and Adams. Boulder County was even declared a major disaster area by President Obama, so why is Colorado University of Boulder not canceling classes?

As with every almost every disaster situation, heroes in our community and beyond have stepped up to lend a helping hand; the Colorado floods are no exception.

A number of shelters for flood victims have been established in Larimer and Weld counties because of flooding from the Big Thompson, Poudre, and South Platte Rivers. Here is a quick list for you:
