Fort Collins May Get an Automated Bike Sharing Program

Wouldn’t it be nice to bike around Old Town without having to load and unload your bike from your car first?  It looks like that might be happening.

The city of Fort Collins is considering investing in a $1.1 million bike sharing program, which would allow residents to rent (and return) bicycles at automated kiosks all over town, according to The Coloradoan.

FC Bikes envisions a system in Fort Collins that would have 20 stations in its first phase and 200 bikes. Stations would be strategically placed around Old Town, Colorado State University and busy bike corridors.

Station sites would likely include the Downtown Transit Center, Old Town Square, New Belgium Brewing Co., the CSU Transit Center, Campus West, the Gardens on Spring Creek, and stations along the MAX line.

Much like similar programs across the country, bikes would be available to rent 24 hours a day, and could be returned to any other rental location (meaning you don’t have to bring the bike back to where you got it).

Seems like this could be a good way to encourage alternative forms of transportation, and maybe even eliminate some of that pesky Old Town traffic!

Would you use a bike sharing system in Fort Collins?
