Forever 21 is finding themselves in hot water, after social media exploded, claiming that the fashion outlet was promoting "Rape Culture." The item of clothing in question, is a tee shirt that states, "Don't Say maybe if You Want to Say No."

According to
Mic, the shirt was selling for $19.90, and is now listed as "sold out" on Forever 21's website. Forever 21 has also released a statement saying, "Upon receiving feedback from our customers, we took immediate action to have it removed from our website. We sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by the product." Many on social media, including Project Consent, are calling out Forever 21 and their shirt for "victim blaming," when it comes to sexual assault.

I totally agree that no one should be blaming the victim of a sexual assault. Victim blaming is a disgusting practice. However, when I first saw the tee shirt, I interpreted it another way.  I took it as an empowering message, telling women to say what they feel, and not feel pressured into any situation they are not comfortable.

In a satirical manner, I stated on my show that I liken this to when my wife asks me to watch "The Notebook." I tell her maybe, to not hurt her feelings, but I really want to say no. Not that I'm attempting to make lite of rape, or victim blaming... but I should be more strong when my wife asks me to watch her favorite movie, and say no, even though it may hurt her feeling.

I interpreted this tee shirt the same way. That it was telling women to stand up and not be afraid to be vocal when they find themselves in an unwanted situation... and apparently, some others on social media interpreted the shirt the same way, however we are undoubtedly in the minority.
