Disposing of oil and gas properly protects the health of our community.

Sending these toxic chemicals to the wrong place can have unseen and unfavorable consequences.

The good news is that Larimer County makes it easy to dispose of it properly, plus, even better than that, they make it free.

These instructions from the county are for small, residential lawn equipment.

Before we list them, let's consider battery power

I've switched to a battery powered mower and weed whacker, and I love it. My battery powered mower has more than enough to handle more than a half acre, and there are rebates being offered that allow you to stop using old, noisy, smelly, polluting machines and start using cleaner, quieter battery powered ones. You have until late June, and you can learn about it here.

Here are the simple instructions on how to properly dispose of oil and gas from lawn and garden equipment for free in Larimer County.

1) Drain oil and gas into a non-leaking container (i.e. plastic milk
jug, glass jar with lid). You can combine oil and gas in one
container. Use extreme caution. Work outside and away from
open flame or sources of heat. Don’t smoke. It’s highly
flammable and toxic!

2) Seal the container and label it “Oil and gas mixture” .

3) Take your container during operating hours to the:

Larimer County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility

5887 South Taft Hill Road (at the Larimer County Landfill)

HOURS:
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday; 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

4) They will accept your container and dispose of the contents.

• DO NOT LEAVE THE CONTAINER ANYWHERE AT THE SITE
WHEN THEY ARE CLOSED.

• DO NOT POUR THE OIL & GAS MIXTURE INTO THE HAZ.
WASTE FACILITY OIL TANK YOURSELF.
(The oil tank cannot accept gasoline.)
