Harlem Globetrotter At Rocky Mountain High School

They came streaming into the gym at Rocky Mountain High yesterday. Hundreds of freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors. They were there for one reason. To see a Harlem Globetrotter up close and personal.

While we were waiting for the arrival of Scooter Christiansen, we had a free throw shootout amongst the students, then a half court challenge it was much fun to watch.

When Scooter arrived he immediately went into what makes The Globetrotters so special when it comes to being role models for kids and young adults, the C.H.E.E.R program

“The Globetrotters designed the program with assistance from the U.S. Department of Education. While there are several different character traits emphasized by various programs across the country, the Globetrotters’ program focuses on Cooperation, Healthy mind & body, Effort, Enthusiasm, and Responsibility, using the acronym “C.H.E.E.R.”™

The program targets 6-12 year-old students and involves Globetrotter players incorporating their signature ball handling skills with a “C.H.E.E.R.”™ basketball. The basketball includes each of the character traits printed on the outside of the ball and is used as a key tool during the presentation to each school. Globetrotter players encourage students to match their actions with those five character traits in all their life experiences with parents, teachers and one another. ”

Then Scooter brought out a group of students and one “responsible” adult to participate in some tricks of his trade and they did very well. He then went on to show some of his skills, dribbling, spinning the ball on his head and shooting from half court. It was fun, energetic and afterward the kids swarmed around him for autographs and to ask questions.

Check out the picture gallery and I’m sure we’ll bring another Globetrotter to Show and Tell again next year.
