Fort Collins High School came under fire for stopping a celebration administrators said was offensive.

The school rejected a student council proposal to add " 'Merica Day" to its themed spirit-week events. Campus and school district officials said they rejected the use of " 'Merica" because it "is a slang term that is often used in a negative stereotypical way to describe life in the U.S."

UrbanDictionary.com defined 'Merica as a "hick" phrase meaning "If you don't like they way things are here in Merica then you can git out."

Fort Collins High School principal Mark Eversole sent a letter to parents on Tuesday, stating that the school would rename next Monday, the first day of its spirit week, "America Day."
