As I cruise the trails of Fort Collins, I love the installments of adaptive technologies that are included in most of the crosswalks that I encounter.

You know the beeps that you hear when you are at a big intersection? Those are for people with impaired vision. With assistance, people with impaired vision are enjoying higher qualities of life

This is thanks in part to technologies that are being utilized, but even more so to the people with vision impairments that do what they have to do to function in our society.

There are over 10,000 people living along the Northern Front Range of Colorado who are at risk for vision loss? That number is taken from the statistics released from the Center for Disease Control back in 2012. Eye diseases are the leading cause of blindness and they tend to affect older Americans (age 60 plus) more than any other population.

Northern Colorado is not immune to these issues. However, we do have solid support here.

Not only are their wonderful eye docs like those at the Eye Center of Northern Colorado, but Fort Collins is home to the unique services of the Ensight Skills Center!

adEnsight's services are not meant to bring anyone's vision back, but rather to show individuals that with the right training and adaption, vision loss does not have to be the end of your independence. Moyer and the Ensight staff believe that knowledge is power, and the more you learn about your eye disease and prognosis, the less fear you will have about your future.
