A couple of CSU graduates are setting out to give local farmers the chance to compete with big retailers. They plan to provide a place for direct sales line from farm to consumers in our community.

Audrey Snyder and Natasha Lloyd are planning to open the ReKaivery food hub this summer. It will be a solar-powered 320 square foot shipping container store, full of local items. They will be stocking fresh produce to jam, salsa, bread, and honey. They will also be able to accept WIC and SNAP benefits,

"It's like a grocery store, but just on a small, hyperlocal level," explained Lloyd, who met Snyder while the two were earning their Impact MBAs from Colorado State University.

The Census of Agriculture reported that there were more small farms in 2007 than in 2002. The USDA said "despite the continuing shift in production to larger farms, the contribution of small commercial family farms is still considerable. They numbered about 800,000 of the 2.2 million U.S. farms in 2007, and the value of their output exceeded the production of all Corn Belt farms. And many small operations remain profitable."
The work of farming and ranching is hard, but I always hear about the rewards of feeling like what you do is real work. Dirt work. That's worth doing.
