It's getting to be that time of the year again where we invite some friends over, fire up the grill and have a few cold ones. You can drink, just don't drive.

Through Labor Day, law enforcement will focus more heavily on impaired driving, especially around holidays and major events as part of their Checkpoint Colorado enforcement.

There are three heightened enforcement periods this summer – Memorial Day (May 23-27), Fourth of July (July 3-7) and Labor Day (Aug. 15-Sept. 2).

The Heat Is On is CDOT's other campaign. It runs the entire year with 12 specific DUI enforcement periods centered on national holidays and large, public events.

In 2013 in Northern Colorado, there were 55 DUI arrests over Memorial Day weekend, 69 DUI arrests over Fourth of July weekend and 177 DUI arrests over Labor Day.

More details about the DUI enforcement plans and arrest results can be found at HeatIsOnColorado.com.

We want you to have fun this summer and know that there will be drinking during this nice Colorado summer, just don't get behind the wheel. It is a risk that doesn't need to be taken.
