This Saturday marks the season opening of Buckhorn Northern Railroad, also known as the little train that runs through Loveland's North Lake Park. All aboard! The Buckhorn Northern Railroad is an authentic replica of the actual steam train that hauled clay from the Devil’s Backbone to Wild’s Brick Yard west of Loveland. In honor of Kids to Parks Day, the Loveland Lions Club is offering free rides to children from noon to 4 p.m. on May 27. Rides will be available until 8 p.m., but after 4 p.m. a 75 cent fare will be charged. During the afternoon, there will also be police cars, a firetruck and a race car on display. A hot dog stand is going to be on-site too, cooking up lunch, courtesy of the Lions Club.

The rest of the Memorial Day weekend schedule for train rides is noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. The regular summer schedule gets going on May 30, and is as follows:

  • Mondays - CLOSED   (Open Memorial Day and Labor Day Mondays)
  • Wednesdays - 2 to 8 p.m.
  • Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays - 12 to 8 p.m.

Train rides are 75 cents, and children 2 and under ride free. Proceeds go to eyesight projects of Lions Club. North Lake Park is located at 29th Street and Taft Avenue.
