Are Your Kids Buying Drugs Through this Secret Facebook Group in Colorado?
A secret Facebook group where Colorado children as young as 12 years of age can buy and sell drugs has been uncovered.
Denver7 reports that Michael Harris, Jefferson County D.A. investigator for the Child Sex Offender Internet Investigations Unit, first learned about the group called "Fly Society 420" from a parent whose 15-year-old daughter had been buying drugs through the group.
"We've seen LSD, Adderall, prescription drugs for sale," Harris told Denver7, adding that of the group's 900 members, 171 could be identified as being underage.
Most of the users have fake names, but Harris was able to identify and track down 71 kids and teens from Jefferson County schools and 100 from other parts of Colorado.
Diana Wilson, Jefferson County Public Schools spokeswoman, said a letter was sent out to parents about the group and they will be focusing their efforts on drug education and prevention.
After the West Metro Drug Task Force launched an investigation into drug transactions by the group's administrators, they arrested Christopher Bouma on 3 counts of Distribution of a Controlled Substance.
No students will face prosecution.
"Trying to bring this to the attention of the public and the parents - that's the number one goal...We have a lot of shocked parents," Harris told Denver7, adding that officers met with parents of teenage group members all day Thursday.
Harris suggests parents keep an eye on their social media use, recommending parental controls and a "technology curfew" each night.
