Della (sleeping, above) loves the car.

When the temperature is right, or even a little too hot, she'll spend hours in it. She'll sleep, chill, and just look at the world. She loves her Subaru.

I can rewind back to the time we first met. When Della, then 2 years old and not confirmed if she was housebroken or not, first hopped in the hatch of my car, the fact that it has a rubber cover made me feel better. I'm not trying to write an advertorial here. I am just super happy to be working with a company that makes my awesome car, created no waste when they made it, and helps dogs in need in our local area. We've got this great event coming up Saturday and it made me think of when I made Della a part of our family.

The event I'm talking about is a mobile adopt and low cost vaccine clinic coming up on Saturday May 9, 2015 at Greeley Subaru with the Humane Society of Weld County. Make sure you join us! It's happening from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Look at that face. That's called contentment.

Sometimes I see Della and it seems that she is deep in thought.

I picked her up from the Humane Society when I was on a trip there to visit a puppy. I hadn't planned on adopting a full grown dog. I looked at the puppy. It looked at me. I didn't like what I saw in its eyes. It just looked like chewer. It would have made a fine pet, I'm sure, but that would have taken years, and maybe dozens of pairs of shoes, numerous couches, chairs and who knows what else.

Then, I walked through the area with the dogs. Every one of them, down to the pooch, was on their hind legs, barking in my face with excitement, nervousness, desperation or something, except Della (then temporarily called Che). She was cowering in the back of her cage. She was silent. She seemed very sad. Heartbroken, even.

I said, "Hey, little girl, what are you doing back there." She cautiously approached the front of the cage. "Are you ok?"

Then, she did what I would later learn is her signature love move. She sits, and lifts her front paw in a pulling motion. It looks like shake, but Della doesn't shake. She hugs. That was it. She had me. I've been hers ever since.

Della loves getting presents. She'll sit attentively and even open them herself if they smell good enough. Here she is receiving her first Steeler's collar, to the great disappointment of my wife.

Join us Saturday at Greeley Subaru. The Humane Society of Weld County will be there, maybe with animals but definitely with information on how you can bring more love into your home by adopting a creature you will love.
