The issue of gun control has been in the news for much of the past several years, and an incident in Fort Collins has brought more awareness to it.

According to the Coloradoan, Fort Collins police were called to Beattie Elementary School Sunday afternoon after a resident found a handgun in the lawn of the school.

Police confirmed that it was an actual handgun, but have not stated if the gun was loaded.

An email was sent to parents on Monday, which was also the first day of school for the Poudre School District. The entire school grounds were searched to see if any other weapons existed on the property. None were found.

Officials tell the newspaper that this is the perfect opportunity for parents to talk to their children about gun safety, and the dangers if they are mishandled.
