I kept reading all the local stories about the need in Northern Colorado recently for blood donations, due to the many local traumas which have caused a shortage. It was weighing heavy on my mind that I should donate, since I am an O Positive blood type, which is highly needed.

I have not donated blood in 15 years. I had to take my kids. But, guess what, it wasn't bad at all. I made an appointment at the Garth Englund Blood Donor Center, near the Albertson's and Culver's on Lemay in Fort Collins. This donation center is run by UC Health. I was in and out in less than an hour. My boys had to come with me. They sat on a comfy couch right near me and were awarded a treat at the end.

According to the American Red Cross, someone needs blood every 2 seconds in the United States. For trauma, O blood types are very much needed.

There used to be all kinds of hang-ups surrounding blood donation such as, tattoos and antibiotics. A lot of those restrictions have been revised. Most of the local, reputable tattoo shops have provided Garth Englund with a letter of sterile practice, which means you can donate if you've been tattooed by one of these shops, within the last year. Mostly you just need to be in general good health.

Make an appointment or just stop in and donate if you can. It's an immediate feel good. Both mental and physical.
