The Foothills Mall has more stores, shops and restaurants opening all the time.

I've been checking them out with excitement, because this place is in my neighborhood, and my 10 month old son seems to like to shop. It isn't always easy to figure out what to do with the kids, but since he seems to like to browse, any store is a good store to me.

When he finally starts to walk, run and play, though, I think the new activity center at the Foothills Mall will be a great place to take him. I expect it to be pretty nice, because that's how things are built in Northern Colorado. The $5.8 million dollar structure is inside the mall, located right across from the parking lot. It will include some cool amenities.

The City is pursuing LEED Gold standard certification for the building. Inside the 24,000-square-foot facility:

  • A full-size gymnasium
  • Two fitness/dance studios
  • A weight-cardio room
  • Locker rooms
  • Multi-purpose space
  • Classrooms
  • Conference room

It will replace the Youth Activity Center formerly located on Monroe Avenue. Child development, youth and adult sports, fitness and dance programs will be offered in the facility.

Recreation staff will offer the community a chance to explore the new facility without fees through Sunday, April 17. Tours of the new center and some special fitness classes and programs will be offered from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 2.

“We are thrilled to be opening this new facility and look forward to connecting with more of our residents in Midtown,” said Bob Adams, Recreation director. “This is a fitting tribute to our 50 years providing parks and recreation services in the Fort Collins community. We are dedicated to serving the community with quality recreational opportunities.”

I love the fact that there will be more than just commerce in the new mall. An activity center is a great addition to the new mall.
