Democratic Representative, Steve Lebsock from Thornton called the term illegal alien is "outdated and hurtful language". Adding that "We should not be referring to human beings as aliens".

The bill will go from the Democrat led House to the Republican led Senate. Out of the 31 Republicans in the House, twelve voted in favor of House Bill 1396. Other Republicans, such as Representative, Justin Everett from Littleton were in opposition of the bill. "It's that PC thing that's being pushed" according to an article in the Denver Post.

Nonpartisan legislative analysts stated that the bill would not create a large expense to change the language on a few state laws.
