What started as a fun camping trip over the weekend led to the accusation and arrest of 2 out-of-state campers for arson, resulting in several homes destroyed and a mandatory evacuation for residents living in the 308-acre Cold Springs Fire perimeter.

According to a news release from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, detectives arrested Jimmy Andrew Suggs, 28, and Zackary Ryan Kuykendall, 26, at the Nederland High School evacuation site on Sunday afternoon at 4:40 p.m. for their role in the start of the wildfire. The Vinemont, Alabama, residents are charged with fourth degree arson - a class 4 felony - because lives were endangered as a result of the fire.

Detectives and investigators determined the fire started at an ad hoc campsite near the Peak-to-Peak Highway and Cold Springs Road. Suggs and Kyukendall, along with a female friend, were camping on private property and had established a campfire overnight Thursday into Friday morning. BCSO says the men didn't properly extinguish a fire by dousing it with water, nor did they make sure the ashes were cool to the touch before leaving the campsite.

The initial fire was reported via 911 at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Both Suggs and Kuykendall were booked at the Boulder County Jail. Their friend, Elizabeth Burdeshaw, 20, also from Vinemont, is not facing charges, as she was not involved in creating, maintaining, or extinguishing the campfire.

The BCSO also announced Sunday that all open burning has been banned in Boulder County until further notice due to the Cold Springs Fire.
