I have to admit, the stories I've been hearing about unnecessary induction are what have lead me to select a midwife instead of a doctor.

That sounds crazy to many. But, the stories I heard of the unnatural increase in contractions because of the use of pitocin, the unnecessary episiotomies, and cesarean sections happening more often than they need to have made me ask some questions.
All of those procedures are absolutely necessary at times. I just have a fear that they could be done even if it is unneeded.
The stories I have heard from friends and family, the movies produced by Ricki Lake (Business of Being Born series), and other sources of information have made us decide to have a natural birth. It is also because my wife, Sarah, is healthy, it's her first birth, and we have no reason to expect any problems (besides the fact that birthing another human is a crazy event where anything can happen).

I came across a Facebook page calling itself "Improving Birth" that is bringing attention to the problem that we are trying to avoid.

One of their photo albums has women posting their birth stories where things didn't go really well. Again, just something that scared me into thinking more about the way we are going to approach the coming birth.

Things do become more positive on this page, which, as it's name implies, is about making things better, not just airing grievances. Their is another photo gallery where people say how they are improving birth.
