Well, that was a hell of an ending.

After months of hype and controversy, the big night arrived. The red carpet was rolled out, the votes were cast, and host Jimmy Kimmel delivered about a million best Matt Damon jokes. At last, the 89th Academy Awards arrived. And they ended with an conclusion so shocking it rivaled any in this year’s nominees. When we posted our list of winners at the beginning of the night we said there could be surprises. Little did we know how right we'd be.

That’s because Warren Beatty announced La La Land was this year’s Best Picture winner. But moments later, while the team behind La La Land were still giving their acceptance speeches, Kimmel, Beatty, and Academy Awards producers rushed the stage to say that a mistake had been made. Moonlight was, in fact, the Best Picture winner. Beatty explained that he had been given the envelope for Best Actress, which was why he’d taken such a long pause before announcing the winner.

It was a wild ending to a night that was otherwise fairly predictable. La La Land won six awards, including Best Director and Best Actress. Manchester by the Sea’s Casey Affleck topped FencesDenzel Washington in the year’s most hotly debated race. Both Supporting categories went to their predicted winners: Mahershala Ali for Moonlight and Viola Davis for Fences.

Here’s the full list of winners (at least until they reveal that actually Hacksaw Ridge won all along). Congrats to all the winners, and to the team behind La La Land for being gracious in defeat in incredible circumstances.
