As Colorado residents, we are all too familiar with the horrors of school shootings. However, one Alabama school district is taking a new approach when it comes to student safety. What do you think of the security can? Students at W.F. Burns Middle School are being asked to bring canned food to school... But not for lunch, but for protection. The Superintendent of the district, Dr. Kelli Hodge, got the idea from Auburn University's Department of Public Safety. They teach students, in lockdown situation, to barricade the door, then to attach the intruder by throwing books and backpacks at them if they are still able to breach the classroom.

Dr. Hodge has taken this action plan to the next level by having students cary canned food. The students first action is to barricade he door of the classroom. However, if the assalent makes it through, the middle schoolers would then pelt the intruder with their cans. KOAA News in Colorado Springs, quoted Hodge stating, "You try to evacuate and keep people informed and away from harm's way as much as possible. And you know, that this is just really a very small part. But you know, the whole canned good thing just sort of took people by surprise."
