I recently read The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. Good book. You may have seen him on Oprah. He is the professor diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, that gives a “last lecture” on what he had learned in life, and what he thought was worth mentioning to pass along. Lots of meaningful ideas.

The quote in the book was, “When you’re screwing up and nobody says anything to you anymore, that means they’ve given up on you.” That’s a pretty transforming idea. What? Embrace my critics? I think I’ll just get defensive and push back instead! Bad idea. Our critics are likely the very people that care enough to want to help us be better.

It makes more sense to me when I picture a coach and a little league player, but what about your boss or spouse. That pill gets a little harder to swallow. Gulp, be grateful, and take a look at what they have to say. Yes,
really.

(Please talk to a professional before attempting to criticize a spouse, as spousal criticism may lead to cold shoulders, evil looks, bad blood, verbal attacks, mood swings, hurt feelings, and reopening of old wounds. Use only as directed.)

Have you hugged a critic today?
