For 25 years the city of Fort Collins and Larimer County have been helping to repurpose Christmas trees into free mulch.

Turns out a live Christmas tree can be green in more ways than one.

We cut ours down this year, and the Forest Service is a fan of that because it also kills two birds with one stone; it spreads holiday cheer and helps with wildfire mitigation.

Once we're finished with our tree, we'll take it one of the sites listed below, where it will be chipped and then city residents can come and pick it up as free mulch for their landscaping.

In order to be even more energy efficient, the city is going to have the trees chipped on site. This will reduce the pollution that would have been created when the trees were shipped to one site, chipped and then taken as mulch to another.

There will be signs at the locations, so be sure to follow what they say, and don't forget to completely remove all ornaments and decorations from the trees before dropping them off. Any items besides wood don't do well going through the chipper and will contaminate the mulch.
