In July of 2016, I noticed crews were putting in concrete and plumbing where it had always been just grass, at the southeast corner of Harmony and Taft Hill Roads.  Today, it has an entrance; one small, completed house; another house that's been in progress since last summer, I believe; and a sign at the entrance saying "Harmony Gardens."

So why the lag in... whatever this project is and or was?

There's no mistake here.  This is Habitat for Humanity's largest development in the history of Fort Collins, and it's slated for a five-year completion.  In that time, this space will hold 48 homes that are especially energy efficient.  It's supposed to house 144 people.

Habitat recognizes the urgent need for affordable housing in Fort Collins, and is partnering with the city to bring it to fruition; but they also want to make sure the neighborhoods we're creating aren't dumps.  From Habitat Fort Collins' website:

  • "The shared open green space also fits the priority of designing neighborhoods that encourage connection and community. Habitat’s ultimate goal is to create a world in which everyone has a decent, affordable place to live in dignity and safety.
  • Great attention was given to the fine details of landscaping, lighting, signage, white picket fences and warm, inviting and usable porches.
  • The development maximizes density and green space, including park-like shared green courts and a designated pocket park, which will include a playground designed for children ages 5-12."

I am hoping to spend some time volunteering to help complete this project, and they need as much help as they can get.  Donations come in very handy as well.  If you'd like to get involved, you can contact Mara Cosgrove, Philanthropy Director, at 970-488-2603 or mcosgrove@fortcollinshabitat.org.
