We can thank World War II for the popularity of pizza in America. While there were pizzerias and people making pizza in America as early as the late 1800's, the returning G.I.'s are really the ones who helped to popularize it.

Finding good food in Italy and France during WWII was difficult. Army rations provided calories, but not much else, so they were always hungry for any kind of food they could find. And they found pizza.

When they came home, they began to find Italians near where they lived who made pizza and it's only grown since then!
