Weld County Residents Will Be Able To Vote On Becoming The 51st State

Weld County CourthouseSince early this summer, people in a handful of Colorado counties have been toying with the idea of breaking off and creating a new state. At a meeting this morning, the Weld County Commissioners actually approved a resolution that will allow residents to vote on whether or not they would like the Board to pursue the creation of a 51st State.

According to a press release from Weld County, this question will show up on ballots in November:

Shall the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, in concert with the county commissioners of other Colorado counties, pursue becoming the 51st state of the United States of America?

Ten Colorado counties (Cheyenne, Kit Carson, Lincoln, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, Weld and Yuma) have all participated in discussions throughout June and July regarding the statehood initiative.

“Even residents who didn’t agree with forming a new state, still wanted to be able to vote on the issue,” said Commissioner Chairman William Garcia.

When I first heard about this I figured it was more of a publicity stunt that rural Colorado supporters were going to use to shine the spotlight on things they think were being overlooked by other voters. I never thought it would actually make it on the ballot. Shows what I know.

I’m not sold that a 51st state is (or is not) a good solution for the problems being argued, but this is sure to stir up some controversy and some very different conversations in the next few months.
