As confirmed cases of pertussis (whooping cough) have been circulating in Weld County and across Colorado, prevention is the main message that local public health officials want to stress.

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a contagious bacterial infection that affects the respiratory tract.  It begins with cold-like symptoms and a cough that may progressively become more severe, with the person developing fits of uncontrollable coughing.  In between coughing fits, the individual may look and feel fine.

GET VACCINATED

The best way to prevent pertussis is to get vaccinated.  Vaccines are available for children, adolescents and adults.  Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment is encouraging all residents to check their immunization records and make sure their DTap/Tdap vaccine is up-to-date.  DTap/Tdap prevents 3 diseases with one shot—Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis.

Aside from vaccination, additional tips to protect yourself and your family include:

  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid sharing any food or drinks with others.
  • Keep infants away from anyone who has cold symptoms or is coughing.
  • Stay home from work or school if you are sick.

For more information on pertussis visit weldhealth.org or call the pertussis hotline at 970.304.6470 ext. 2230.
