Weld and Larimer Sheriffs Grapple with New Gun Laws
Weld County Sheriff John Cooke and Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith both say they refuse to enforce any unconstitutional federal gun laws. Sheriff Smith posted on Facebook that he would challenge any law that he considers an infringement on citizens’ constitutional rights. However, in an interview with the Denver Post on Thursday, Smith said he did not mean to imply that he would determine whether a law was constitutional or not. Sheriff Cook calls President Obama’s sweeping plan to address gun violence, “out of line” and says he refuses to enforce any part of it.His comments are featured in the Greeley Trib.
