A major recall in the world of cycling has affected Trek Bicycles after a consumer was paralyzed and two others were injured after their brakes came to a sudden stop. The recall affects bicyclists in both the United States and Canada, with 900,000 bikes in the U.S. and 98,000 in Canada. The model years included in the recall are from 2000 - 2015.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, the bikes' front wheels can come to a sudden stop or separate from the bicycle if the open quick release lever on the front wheel hub comes into contact with the front disc brake assembly.

The commission continued that due to the defect, one person was left quadriplegic while another rider sustained injuries to their face and another had a fractured wrist.

If you own a Trek Bicycle from those model years, the company is instructing all owners to a dealer for free replacement quick releases. Consumers will also receive a $20 coupon if you bring your bike in for an inspection and tune up. The process should only take five minutes to complete.

Trek Bicycles are sold locally at Lee's Cyclery (with locations in Fort Collins and Loveland) and the Bike Peddler in Greeley.
