Small wildfire burning in Rocky Mountain National Park

A small wildfire was burning in Rocky Mountain National Park last night although the size of the fire last night was only about one-half acre. Extreme fire behavior is not expected as a result of the 5 inches of rain received over the last two weeks. The cause of the fire is suspected to be lightning.

Door to door solicitation

A year after the city lifted its ban on door-to-door salespeople, 43 companies have obtained permits. The change has created opportunity for legitimate businesses that play by the rules and it’s created regulations for those that don’t. When a business obtains a solicitation permit from the city, the salespeople are required to submit to background checks and obtain photo IDs to be used when knocking on doors.

No English Channel swim for George Thornton

Retired Colorado State University professor George Thornton won’t be the oldest man ever to swim across the English Channel. An intense period of rain and howling winds that has caused serious flooding in most parts of the United Kingdom thwarted Thornton’s Guiness Book of World Records attempt to become the oldest man to swim across the English Channel at age 72. Swimmers are only allowed to attempt to cross the English Channel from July 12 – 18 and the weather prevented Thornton’s attempt.

Gang member sentenced

A Greeley gang member has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for his role in the attack on a rival gang member. David Anthony Salamanca pleaded guilty on June 20th to one count of first-degree burglary-assault/menace after he and several other men broke into the house of a rival gang member and attacked him using 40-ounce beer bottles and a knife.

CSU track star at London Games

Former CSU track and field star Janay DeLoach will represent Team USA at the London, Olympics and the entire community is invited to a public sendoff tomorrow in Fort Collins. The event is at 4:30 p.m.on Friday at CSU’s Glenn Morris Field House. DeLoach  qualified for the 2012 Summer Games by finishing third in the long jump at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Wolves return to sanctuary

All the wolves evacuated from a sanctuary during the devastating High Park fire in Larimer County last month are back home, but their facility was damaged greatly by the fire. The High Park blaze destroyed a caretaker cabin and two sheds, and some enclosures were damaged. The torrential rains that followed caused further damage.
