‘Spotlight’ and Idris Elba Lead Full List of 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards Winners

The 2016 Screen Actors Guild (or SAG) Awards were held last night, honoring the best in last year’s movies and television. Unlike the Oscars, the SAG Awards were a bit more diverse this year, with Idris Elba winning acting prizes for his roles in Beasts of No Nation and Luther. Meanwhile, Spotlight took home the award for Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture, which is basically the SAG’s Best Picture award.

Speaking of Best Picture, the SAG Awards do not typically predict which film will take home that prize at the Oscars, but I wouldn’t take Spotlight out of the race just yet. Most of the voters in the acting branch of the Academy belong to SAG-AFTRA, and if Spotlight’s ensemble was heavily favored by their peers, then it still stands a good chance at the Oscars.

The SAG Awards do have a very good track record when it comes to predicting Oscar winners in acting categories for the same reason, and over the last three years, the winners in all four SAG acting categories went on to win in their respective categories at the Oscars. But what makes this year’s awards a little more interesting is that Idris Elba is the first actor to win a SAG acting award when he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar in the same category.

Elba won for Best Supporting Actor in Beasts of No Nation, and Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie for his work in the BBC’s Luther. .
