In an "attempt" to enrich students who are taking Sexual Health Class, a school took a group of middle school and high school students to an adult sex toy store. The Gaia Democratic School, a private k-12 school in Minneapolis, is backing its decision to take the students to the Smitten Kitten, siting that it was "meant to enrich a year-long Sexual Health Class, and that it fell directly in line with it's curriculum taught in the classroom.

In a statement on the school website, the school stated its philosophy, as addressed the controversy:

Gaia is a private school that provides holistic educational services to students K-12 with emphasis on democratic process, individualized instruction, academic freedom, self-motivation, cooperative learning, youth empowerment, and environmental stewardship. We are part of an education movement that has a long, fascinating history and a vibrant, viable future.... Despite the burst of publicity in our last weeks of school, Gaia Democratic School’s board of directors stands behind the premise of the field trip; we view it as a legitimate learning experience that relates directly to topics covered during our year long Sexual Health class. Our inclass discussions paved the way to a store visit and the participants communicated to us that the trip was a positive educational experience. No student was required to attend.

This statement however isn't sitting so well with some of the parents according to Fox 10 Phoenix. One parent in particular, named Lynn Floyd, is considering legal action, and has already removed all their of his three children from the school. Floyd said, "I wanted our children to grow up and remain children as long as possible."
