We're sorta shocked and sorta not shocked about the news that singer Robin Thicke and wife Paula Patton are ending their relationship. The couple, married for almost nine years and together for approximately 20, confirmed their breakup on Monday, Feb. 24.

"We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time," Thicke, 36, and Patton, 38, said in a joint statement issued to PEOPLE.

Thicke and Patton were high school sweethearts, having met when he was just 14. They began dating when he was 16 and married in 2005. Son Julian was born in April 2010.

While 2013 was a watershed year for Thicke, with his career finally exploding on the back of the controversial video for 'Blurred Lines,' the definitive anthem of summer 2013. Patton remained by his side and they often gushed about one another.

The blue-eyed soul singer spoke about his love for his wife on Howard Stern and in October 2013 said that 'Blurred Lines' is about his wife and that she is the "good girl" he sings about.

Patton also spoke of their deep connection, saying, "The best is when you love someone deeply and those feelings are equally returned. Also, Robin is really there for me. When times are good or bad or sad or happy or boring, just having somebody by your side to help you through means everything. I know I can count on him standing right next to me always."

Even though Thicke was behaving questionably by grabbing a fan's tush after his already raunchy VMAs performance with Miley Cyrus and then dirty dancing with a woman last month in Paris, he and Patton seemed to be going strong, defying the rumors and the gossip.

Apparently, things were not quite what they seemed.
