Sad news for Disney fans today, as TMZ reports that Richard “Dickie” Jones, the voice of Pinocchio from the 1940 animated classic, has passed away at the age of 87.

‘Pinocchio’ was the second animated feature film to be produced by Disney after 1937′s ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,’ which helped shaped Disney’s future in animation for years to come.

The movie was based on the classic children’s fairy tale by Carlo Collodi about a carver named Geppetto who builds a wooden puppet named Pinocchio. The puppet magically comes to life, thanks to the Blue Fairy, who tells Pinocchio that he can become a real boy as long as becomes ”brave, truthful, and unselfish.”

The film has been considered one of Disney’s best animated features, as it holds a spot in the United States Film Registry among other films that can be characterized as ”culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

After lending his voice for ‘Pinocchio’ as a boy, he went on to star in various cowboy films as an adult before retiring from acting in the 1960s to enter real estate and banking.

Below is an interview Jones did before a screening of ‘Pinocchio’ in 2009 celebrating the film’s 70th anniversary.
