Kids that abuse drugs and alcohol are sometimes setting themselves up for big problems as adults.

It's not difficult to correlate early abuse with later addiction and other issues that make life unmanageable. It's not a new issue, but one that is being handled differently now than it was days past.

Back in my day, authority figures stood at the podium and talked down to me. Don't do drugs, or else! It didn't work. And, to be honest, for some, nothing works. Some kids are going to experiment with drugs and alcohol regardless of what anyone says to them.

For others, however, understanding works better than admonitions. Offering alternatives is better than lecturing. That's why I like and work with Team Fort Collins.

They get it. They understand that if we want to keep kids from abusing drugs and alcohol, we need to offer them something more interesting and rewarding than the aforementioned substances.

Well, Team Fort Collins' latest fundraiser does just that. Talk about a unique opportunity to do something fun that they can't find anywhere, or, more importantly, through any substance!
