Recently, it seems like cops can do no right.

Corruption has long been a problem with people in authority. As the old saying goes, "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

The nature of having police departments gives some people power over others. That's the way it has to work. But, it really sucks when that power is abused.

Watching horrific stories of clashes between police and the citizens they are supposed to protect in towns across our country, I feel my white guilt. Especially as I look out my studio window on a snowy Main Street of one of the whitest town in America (Windsor, CO), while playing Sunglasses at Night by Corey Hart.

We don't feel the strife that is experienced in neighborhoods where clashes between the police and citizens have happened. I have no idea what that is like.

But I don't want to feel guilty for being very thankful for my local police departments.

It makes me so sad to see people that have to be afraid of their policing force, because when I see a cop from Windsor, or Fort Collins, or Colorado in general, it's usually a good thing.

The only thing I need a police officer for is for my protection. Just knowing they are there reassures me.

Earlier this year, my car was being burglarized. I caught the perp in the act, mainly because I get out of bed so freakishly early for my job. When the police showed up, it was the best news of the day. They caught the bad guys. I don't care so much about having justice served as much as I want my neighborhood to have a reputation as a place you shouldn't go carhopping. Be warned, little tweakers. You have to get up pretty early in the morning...

For me, the cops are a bonus.

I see all the shootings and terrible things happening around the country, and I feel sheepish about raising my hand and saying "Hey, I like my communities' cops. They've always been pretty good to me."

I'll also admit that we need to be vigilant in holding our police forces under a microscope, just like everywhere else. It's not like Northern Colorado has perfect police departments. See Berthoud Police.

Do I have to feel guilty about being okay with cops? Couldn't some "attaboys" become contagious and perhaps help lead to some healing?

Maybe, for us to move forward, it could help for communities like ours to show that we are proud of our police force. If we show that there are police departments that are doing it right, would that help?
