My mom rocks enough that since I have a child on the way, the reality of her being 1,500 miles away is setting in.

There is no such thing as a babysitter that I would trust more than my mom. She's the first choice. Number one. There is barely a second place. But there is, and its occupied by my mom's wife, my sisters and sister-in-law. All of them moms.

I'm just about to experience a human birth for the first time. I've been around kids quite a bit, but not a newborn baby. I've never looked at a child as being as much a part of me. The only other birth I was there for was mine, and my mom was the only other Earthly human there with me (besides the medical staff).

Back in those days, all the dads just waited in the waiting room. A group of guys, in a room lit by harsh fluorescent bulbs, waiting to see if their wife and child made it through childbirth. Wow.

My mom made a recent trip out here and helped to set Sarah and I straight, just the way a good mom and grandmother should. She told me to get my basketball out of the foyer and she replaced it with baby decorations. She explained and demonstrated what it is like to do laundry 24/7. She browbeat me and babied Sarah. Standard, solid, necessary mom stuff.

After her visit, I was truly left there thinking, "I'm so glad she came to help us." At 73 years old, she is still a truly MVP caliber mom. Hopefully she will be succeeded by the future Rookie Mom of the Year, the Colorado Sarah Wozniak (both my mom and wife are named Sarah. I know. Oedipus).
