We are continuing to learn more and more about the horrific attacks in Paris that killed dozens of people Friday evening, and yesterday, as the death toll began to climb, many wondered if their friends and family in the area were doing all right.

In light of the events, one of the world's most popular social media outlets is taking action.  Facebook is asking those in the area to check in if they are safe.  Those who have contacts in the city can check the resource and make sure that their loved ones are doing okay.

The tool was first used to ensure the safety of those affected by the Nepal earthquake in April, and hopefully can help several families find peace of mind as they figure out who they know is abroad and checking in.

For more information about U.S. citizens in Paris, you can call 1-888-407-4747 (from the US) or 202-501-4444 (from overseas) for assistance, the U.S. State Department said.
