Most people know about the 'puffing' laws in Colorado, but it doesn't hurt to remind those who might not know as the fines can creep over one-hundred dollars. 'Puffing' is when you leave your vehicle running unattended on public property. In Fort Collins you'll be fined 25-dollars that is due within eight days or it doubles to 50-dollars.

You can get lost in all of the different information on the web, bottom-line, don't leave your car running without you in it. The only exceptions to the rule are on your own property and if you have a remote start. The remote start is a legal way to warm your car as it doesn't require a key and once you put the vehicle into gear the car turns off without the key.

In 2005, Colorado was ranked the ninth most likely state for auto-theft. The anti-puffing laws were put in place, in part, to reduce the number of vehicles stolen. In cold weather months auto-theft increases about 50-percent.
