It was only about two months ago that eight new bison were added to the Laramie Foothills Bison Conservation Herd which reside at Soapstone Prairie Natural Area and Red Mountain Open Space. One of these new additions was a very special calf – the first bison ever in the world to be conceived using IVF.

Unfortunately, however, the baby bison referred to as IVF 1, was recently found dead on-site. The calf's body was located at the bottom of a 30-foot drop-off in April, although officials don't know for sure if it fell or became victim to a predator. Whether they were responsible for killing it or not, coyotes definitely got to the deceased calf at some point, making it difficult for researchers to clearly analyze what was left. Researchers did rule out that being an IVF bison had anything to do with its death. The herd now has 51 members, which is more than five times the size of when they were originally released into the area.
