You can’t make me happier than giving me a great beer and then referencing a great TV show to do so. Rock Bottom Brewery in Loveland has done just that. ‘Arrested Development’ remains as one of my all-time favorite shows, and Rock Bottom’s head brewer must have liked it too.

Arrested Development’ was great. I LOVED that show. Well, the first three seasons, for sure. Michael Bluth and his crazy family always made me laugh. Sidebar- if you’re looking for a crazy drinking game, try ‘Drink ‘em, Michael’- where you take a drink every time someone says ‘Michael’ (do NOT use whiskey). So when I sat down recently at Rock Bottom Brewery at The Promenade Shops at Centerra and saw that they now have a beer name that references one of the best episodes of the show, I nearly cried.

In the second episode (technically the FIRST episode after the ‘pilot’) ‘Top Banana’, two things are notable that happen. One, Michael makes his son, George Michael, manager of the family’s banana stand. Michael says, ‘You’re in charge, Mr. Manager’ and George Michael goes on to keep calling HIMSELF ‘Mr. Manager.’ It’s hysterical. Second, Michael’s father, George Bluth, keeps telling Michael that ‘There’s always money in the banana stand’, as if it’s a money maker. When the banana stand gets into financial trouble with George Michael and his cousin Maebe running it, Michael and George Michael end up burning the stand down. When Michael gives the news to his dad, who’s in prison, dad flips out because there’s always money in the banana stand! There was cash lining the walls of the stand! Classic!

Rock Bottom’s head brewer must have loved the episode, because their latest IPA is ‘Mr. Manager.’ The description of the beer begins, ‘There’s always money in the banana stand’, and goes on to talk about how the beer has banana in it. How cool is that?

Beer and TV just seem to go together, it really shouldn’t come as surprise that local brewer would put them together in a beer!  Have you seen other TV references at craft brewers in Northern Colorado?
