Recently, at a few minutes before 8 a.m., I went on the air and talked about the power of asking for help.

In my experience, it seems like people equate asking for help with weakness. Being too needy may be a problem, but needing help does not mean we are weak. It means we are human.

The best part about asking for help is the amount of people out there who not only will help, but really want to help. There is free help everywhere. Sometimes the help costs money, but if vetted properly, should be worth more than any amount we pay.

When I spoke of this, a listener heard it and sent me a poem she had written about the very subject.

I think it is a great piece and should be read by anyone who is considering asking for help.

My deepest thanks go to Diane, who wrote the poem, and was thoughtful enough to share it with everyone.

Here's what she had to say about sharing it.

My biggest hope is that my words might help somebody recognize their options and exercise them.

The Abyss

As you sink into the abyss

There is a desperation that is hard to miss

It clings; like a miasma; that others can sense

Instead of drawing others to you; they are distant or tense

So at that time when you are looking for a life line

Often; you will find yourself isolated; headed towards decline

Don’t give up; don’t you dare give up; allowing yourself to sink like a stone

No matter if this is the first time; or you’ve been here more times than any have known

You see; the abyss is only a temporary holding area we all have been

Some more often and/or for longer times; it is a dark place we all hold within

The abyss is different for each person; as are the reasons one ends up there

The important things to remember are; there is help and people that care

Sometimes you can get help just by talking to family or friends

Others; talk to strangers; professionals; journal; it all depends

The key is that it will not always be the same answer that gets you free

Each time is different; keep searching and you will see

There really is nothing more anyone can say

You can get through this; don’t let it win or lead you astray

If you don’t know where to get help; ask a professional; counselor; or teacher

There are many sources out there; find one you are comfortable with; maybe your preacher.
