Governor Hickenlooper jumped on board, so I'm in as well.

While I'll admit that realistically, we may never hit that goal, zero highway deaths is what we should be shooting for. I believe that someday, with enthusiastic participation, we could do much better than we did, say, last year.

As you can see by this enlightening graph, the number of fatal crashes has stayed pretty flat for Colorado since 2002.

What do we have to lose? This holiday weekend is a perfect time to simply be more aware, more cautious, more courteous and more patient with other drivers.

Hey, the car companies and the state of Colorado are doing their part. There are some car companies that are making their vehicles so safe that they've had zero deaths per million registered cars. Plus, Colorado officials are working on infrastructure improvements that will make the roads safer.

Now it's on us. Distracted driving, drunk driving, both of those will significantly hurt the effort, so avoid them by any means necessary.

Then, add a little bit of awareness of others, and we can all have a zero death weekend.

Happy Labor Day!
