Some would say oil shale strip mining is on its way to Colorado, and there is nothing that can be done to stop it.

There will still be protestors and human barriers. Last Rush for the Wild West is a documentary film that will be shown by Save the Poudre. It is about the effort to mine almost a million acres of tar sands and oil shale deposits across eastern Utah, Colorado and Wyoming, the groups that oppose this effort, and the issues surrounding the situation.

The battle over the water it would require to complete this project has already gotten contentious. According to KUNC, the companies that own the water rights from the Colorado River have been somewhat withholding about how much they intend to use. Despite the fact that they own enough water to supply over a million people, they don't claim to need that much.

This film tackles the issue of what could happen to the Colorado River after the mining. It refers to Alberta, Canada with horrifying images of the landscape left destroyed, and the effect this same type of mining will have on the Utah watershed as rains wash the chemical residue leftover into a river that supplies water for 36 million people.

Last Rush for the Wild West is a film that is being shown by Save the Poudre at Odell Brewing on Tuesday Jan. 13, 2015 at 7pm.
