Katy Perry recently released the fairy tale themed trailer for her ‘Wide Awake‘ video. The single, her final release from ‘Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection,’ is a ballad about overcoming a broken heart — but Perry explains that there’s a bit more to the track than that.

“I love this song so much,” Perry gushes. “It was a song that I hadn’t written for ‘Teenage Dream.’ I was doing this movie and they asked me if I wanted to write an end title song for the movie,” she said.

We’re guessing she’s talking about ‘Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D’ and not, say, ‘The Smurfs.’ ‘Katy Perry: Part of Me’ gives Katy Cats an inside look at K.P.’s initial struggle and meteoric rise to fame, as well as hints of her family life. The film  hits theaters on July 5, allowing the purple-haired pop tart the opportunity to tie in her hit ‘Firework’ to market the film in a patriotic and timely fashion. Using America’s independence to sell tickets? Smart girl!

“I was like, ‘I know exactly what I want to say.’ I was kind of dying to write another song at that point,” Perry admits. “I didn’t want to wait til I did a whole new record. And it kind of is like the perfect last word of me at this moment.”

“I just wanted to tell a story about myself going through this journey, maybe sometimes trying to get out of the maze,” Perry told MTV News. “There’s good parts; there’s bad parts. Of course, there has been a lot of things that went on last year that I had to get through and overcome. I think what probably kept me going is just the purity of my belief in music.”
