Jon Favreau is Cooking Up ‘Chef’ to Write, Star and Direct [VIDEO]
When Jon Favreau made Swingers, I didn’t realize what a big fan of his I would eventually become. It was a good movie, but Vince Vaughn drove me a little crazy in it. At the time I also didn’t realize that Favreau wrote the movie. No wonder he was so perfect for the role!
Then I found out that he was the man behind the first two ‘Iron Man’ films and ‘Cowboys and Aliens’. That, on top of this brilliant scene in ‘The Break Up’ solidified my forever respect.
Now, Favreau is looking to go the indie route with his next feature. Favreau is currently in negotiations to write, star and direct the indie film ‘Chef.’
With this news, which comes from Variety, it’s hard not to wonder if Favreau is doing ‘Chef’ because of frustrations getting big budget films made. Favreau has been attached to both ‘Jersey Boys‘ (which may now be helmed by Clint Eastwood) and to ‘Magic Kingdom,’ but neither project moved forward with him. Favreau also has experience with low-budget indies, as he made his first big splash in ‘Swingers’ and followed it up with his first directorial effort ‘Made.’
But then also, working against Favreau is the one-two punch of ‘Iron Man 2′ and ‘Cowboys and Aliens.’ The former was successful, but is not as well regarded as the first film, while ‘Cowboys’ was one of 2011’s biggest flops. And though it was Favreau and his work with Robert Downey Jr. that turned ‘Iron Man’ into the franchise it is today (and for that matter, helped start Marvel‘s tremendous winning streak), Hollywood has a short-term memory problem in that you’re often only as successful as your last picture. Not that he isn’t working, Favreau can be seen on the big screen next Friday in ‘Iron Man 3,’ and will appear in Martin Scorsese‘s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘ later this year.
