This is not a pro-graffiti post.

Graffiti is really just vandalism. At its absolute best it can also be an art form. It is expression. It is a pure snap of what that person was thinking at that time.

Hey, a cave wall is a cave wall, whether it's the inside of an actual cave in prehistory, or the outside of a building during our uber-modern times. People have always wanted to put things on the wall.

When left unmanaged, graffiti usually ended up being pretty foul. It was just a mishmash of the last person to go there with a spray can, what they had on their mind that they wanted to get out, and how much paint they wanted to leave. Very anarchic.

Left to run wild, as it was in much of the last century, unfettered graffiti looked a lot like YouTube. You could find the most beautiful thing of all time right next to the nastiest thing of all time.

There were definitely glimpses of brilliance, and graffiti became an art form.

It has also been used to communicate and stimulate movements, national pride and just about anything else you can think of. If it's been thought, it's probably been tagged.

If it's done with permission, it's a mural. If it's done in a clandestine way, it's graffiti.

So, when I saw the guy coming to paint over graffiti on the structure on the east end of Warren Lake, and it made me think, is there any structure in Fort Collins, besides the trains, that has graffiti on it?

The city has a no-graffiti plan. Their website shares a hotline to report graffiti, and assistance with removal.

When you report graffiti, the Graffiti Abatement Team will contact the private property owner, business or City department as soon as possible about the issue and/or assist with the removal. Every effort will be made to see that the graffiti is abated within two (2) business days.
