Volunteers at 12 universities around the world, in a study led by the University of Maryland, were asked to stay away from all e-mails, text messages, Facebook and Twitter updates for 24 hours. They spent 24 hours doing without computers, mobile phones, iPods, television, radio and even newspapers. Researchers found the volunteers began to exhibit symptoms typically seen in smokers attempting to give up the habit, including “feeling fidgety” and “reaching for their mobile phones even when they weren’t there.”
