The Colorado Department of Transportation made some major strides in safety and avoiding traffic congestion in the mountain corridor of I-70 west of Denver.

The roadway was much safer during the 2014-15 winter than it was during the same time period of 2013-14.

Injuries and fatal crashes dropped 35%! That's a big number, especially when it is dealing with something as important in people's lives as safety on I-70.

Weather related crashes went down by 46%. Unplanned closure time dropped by 16%.

Those are some solid results.

And it was a group effort. During the winter, we published numerous posts about the importance of checking our tires to make sure they have enough tread. Plus, the state spent millions on extra plow trucks.

The idea of making a trip along I-70 predictable is the goal, and if last winter is any indication, serious strides are being made toward that.
